The Flowers Series

My FLOWERS paintings were created over a period of three decades - from the 1960s to the 1990s. The media used in these paintings run the gamut from gouache to oil, egg tempera, acrylic and printpainting. Some of the flowers are portrayed in a more or less realistic fashion, while others verge on abstraction. In most cases, I set myself out to express my thoughts and feelings about the flowers depicted, approaching them much as I approached the painting of portraits, with an expressive use of composition and color. The size the flowers alone - occupying, in most instances, the whole canvas - expresses the importance I attributed to them. The bulk of the series was created in the 1960s, before I discovered Georgia O'Keefe. Later, in the 1970s, when I became acquainted with her work, I felt an instant kinship with this great artist, and became interested not only in her paintings of flowers but also in her other work.
